SharePoint Newsfeed App – Social on the go!

SharePoint Newsfeed App – Social on the go!

A surge in popularity of mobile devices over recent years has influenced the way we can better consume information driven through the workplace.

Our Targeting content at mobile devices in SharePoint 2013 insight demonstrates how SharePoint 2013 has better adapted to these changes over recent version.

The SharePoint Newsfeed App, is a great example of a phone App that integrates with SharePoint 2013 and the new SharePoint online, letting you stay connected with social activities of colleagues while on the go.

Available for both the Windows Phone and iPhone/iPad, the App allows you to view your social newsfeed and participate in conversations across SharePoint sites, documents and tags with people that you’re following. You can also share updates, pictures and even access followed documents and SkyDrive Pro Documents.

In addition to configuring your SharePoint farm to offer social functionality, there are some specific steps that need to be carried out within your farm for users to use the App. The full list of pre-requisites are detailed here for Windows Phone users and herefor iOS devices.

It’s worth calling out a specific detail for Windows Phone users, the SharePoint 2013 web application that is hosting the newsfeeds must be configured with basic authentication in order to sign into the App. This can most easily be achieved by extending the Web Application to an additional zone configured to use basic authentication, then ensuring mobile users use this new extension to access newsfeeds from their Windows Phone devices.
